What is Liposuction?
You’ve probably heard of liposuction being referred to as “lipo” before. The hottest celebrities and models have been using liposuction for years to keep their bodies in pristine shape.
Liposuction is a procedure that slims, reshapes, and contours certain areas of the body by removing fat deposits and improving body proportions. While it can be performed alone, it is often performed alongside other surgeries like breast reductions or tummy tucks.
Liposuction is not meant for removing large deposits of fat, and therefore it’s not meant for people who have excessive amounts of fat. However, it can be used to aid in weight loss after you’ve reached below a certain weight.

How Does it Work?
After we get the consultation sorted away, we can schedule you for an appointment. It’s normal to feel nervous the day of your surgery, so let’s walk through what you can expect so we can ease some of those fears.

When Will I See Results from Liposuction?
The results of your new body contour won’t be immediately noticeable due to swelling and fluid retention at the incision site.
However, the treated area should look less bulky after a few weeks, which will give you a good idea of your new body size. Within months, you can expect to see a much thinner, leaner appearance in the treated area.
Liposuction results are generally permanent. However, natural aging or fluctuations in weight can change your body composition and alter the look of your slimmed appearance.
In some cases, it may require that you come back for a subsequent procedure to get the desired results.

Additional Information
Benefits of Liposuction
The risks of liposuction do not outweigh the benefits of achieving your best body. Having a thinner, more contoured appearance because of liposuction can make you feel boosted self-confidence, have a better self-image, and bring you a more positive outlook on life in general.
Removing pockets of fat that have been leftover after an extreme weight loss can also help you feel the effects of your hard work. Some stubborn fat deposits will remain no matter how you change your diet or lifestyle, so liposuction can help you over the finish line.
It can also make you feel more comfortable while wearing certain clothes that fit too snuggly or chafed while performing certain activities. Not to mention, it can make you feel more confident to show off your body on the beach, at the pool, or during intimacy.
Potential Risks of Liposuction
Dr. Zach is an experienced plastic surgeon with years of practice. You’re in good hands here. But with any surgical procedure, there is risk of complications or side effects.
The biggest risk with liposuction is that contour irregularities become apparent. Your skin may appear bumpy or wavy due to fat removal, resulting in poor skin elasticity or unusual healing. This may be permanent.
Additionally, there is also risk of temporary numbness in the affected area, as well as infection if the wounds are not properly taken care of. Pockets of fluid (seromas) may also temporarily accumulate under the skin. In some cases, this will need to be drained with a needle.
Although serious complications are rare, we value transparency and want you to know the risks involved. For one, a cannula may penetrate the skin too deeply and puncture an internal organ, which requires immediate medical care. It’s possible that liposuction leads to a fat embolism, which is a serious injury that results from fat becoming trapped in a blood vessel.
Recovery from Liposuction
Since liposuctions surgeries aren’t too invasive, you should be able to go home the same day. And depending on the area where you’re receiving treatment, the entire procedure can take less than two hours.
Following the procedure, compression garments and bandages are placed over the wounds to control swelling and allow your body to adjust to its new contours. Additionally, it’s possible that small temporary tubes will be placed under the skin to help with fluid drainage.
You can expect to feel some pain, inflammation, and bruising after the procedure. Dr. Zach may prescribe some pain medications to help with pain as well as antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.
You may need to take off work for a few days, and it can take a few weeks before you return to normal everyday activities such as exercise. You’ll also need to follow specific instructions during the healing period to keep your wounds clean.
