What Is Stomach Lipo?

Stomach lipo, also known as abdominal liposuction, is a cosmetic procedure that improves body contours by removing fat from the belly. It is usually performed under local anesthesia and involves inserting a tiny tube (called a cannula) to loosen and extract stubborn fat. As with any liposuction procedure, stomach lipo requires a recovery period of 3 to 4 weeks. Most patients see their final results within 3-6 months after plastic surgery.

Our VASER® Technique

Dr. Zach performs stomach lipo with VASER® technology that uses ultrasonic energy to break apart and loosen fat cells before suctioning. This technique requires the surgeon to insert a probe that emits ultrasound waves into the treatment areas, helping to liquefy fat cell walls. This allows for easier and more precise fat removal compared to traditional liposuction methods. The ultrasound energy emitted by the VASER® probe targets only the fat cells without damaging other tissues. Therefore, this approach is much safer and more effective than standard tumescent liposuction.

Consultation & Preparation for for Stomach Lipo

Before undergoing surgery, each patient has an initial consultation with Dr. Zach. During this appointment, we will:
  • Evaluate the patient’s health and medical history to ensure that they are a good candidate for the procedure
  • Discuss goals and expectations to determine the proper treatment approach
  • Assess the amount and location of fat deposits in the stomach area that could be removed with liposuction
  • Explain the details of the procedure
  • Show before-and-after photos of previous patients
  • Provide information on the liposuction risks, recovery, and costs so that the person can make an informed decision
In the weeks before stomach liposuction, it is important to follow all of Dr. Zach’s guidelines to prepare the body for the procedure and optimal recovery. This includes stopping medications that increase bleeding risk, quitting smoking, arranging transportation and assistance, buying soft foods and other necessary items, and ensuring adequate rest and hydration.

Stomach Liposuction Procedure

Anesthesia

The first step in the stomach lipo procedure is to numb the treatment area. This is done by injecting a large volume of diluted local anesthetic (tumescent solution) into the fat beneath the skin. This medication contains lidocaine to numb the area and epinephrine to constrict blood vessels, reducing bleeding and allowing the fat to be suctioned more easily.
After the anesthetic has taken effect, Dr. Zach makes small incisions in the treatment area. These openings are typically less than 0.5 inches long. They allow the surgeon to insert the VASER® probe to break up fat cells. The number and location of incisions depend on the targeted area.
The VASER® probe emits ultrasound energy to target and selectively break apart fat cell membranes while leaving other tissues intact. This causes the cells to liquefy for easier removal. The surgeon moves the probe back and forth to treat the entire area.
The liquefied fat is removed using a cannula and vacuum device attached to the VASER® system. More than one pass may be needed to take out all excess fat.
After the surgical procedure, Dr. Zach closes the incisions with dissolvable stitches. Compression garments and dressings are applied to promote healing.

Add-On Procedure: Tummy Tuck

Many patients undergoing liposuction end up with sagging skin around the abdomen. Adding a tummy tuck procedure can help address this issue. During this additional surgery, Dr. Zach makes an incision along the bikini line and removes loose skin. He may also tighten the abdominal muscles if needed. Performing a tummy tuck with stomach lipo helps create a flatter, more toned belly.

Recovery After Stomach Lipo

Week 1

The first week of liposuction recovery involves managing swelling, bruising, and discomfort after the procedure. Patients wear a compression garment and are advised to rest and avoid activities. They also take pain medication to manage discomfort. We recommend drinking a lot of water to improve circulation and speed up the healing process. A healthy diet is also crucial for proper recovery.
Swelling and bruising begin to subside. Patients can start incorporating light activities, like short walks, into their daily routines. Discomfort decreases, but pain medication may still be required. Many patients return to work during this period if it does not involve strenuous activity.
Most swelling dissipates by week 4, and bruises fade. Patients usually stop taking pain medicine and wearing compression garments. Normal mobility returns, allowing them to resume daily activities with caution. Dr. Zach gives clearance to start incorporating gentle core exercises by weeks 5-6.
Patients experience major improvements as swelling, bruising, or discomfort disappear completely. The new body contours become visible. Patients can resume strenuous core exercises, weight lifting, or high-intensity workouts. The final results emerge after 3-6 months of recovery.

Ideal Candidate for Stomach Lipo

Good Overall Health

Patients considering stomach lipo should be in good overall health. They should not have any major medical conditions that could impair healing or increase surgical risks. Ideally, patients should be nonsmokers (or quit before the procedure) and have a healthy lifestyle.
The best candidates for stomach liposuction have noticeable fat deposits in the abdomen that do not respond to diet or exercise. Patients with unwanted belly fat and good muscle tone tend to see optimal contours after liposuction.
Ideal candidates have a BMI (body mass index) under 30. This indicates that the patient is not obese. Otherwise, the candidate may be at a higher risk for complications and not see optimal results from liposuction. Maintaining a BMI under 30 can help ensure the safety and success of the procedure. Dr. Zach will assess this characteristic and other health factors during the consultation.
The ideal patient has firm, elastic skin that can adjust after fat removal. Candidates with excellent skin elasticity will see better results. If the skin has been stretched by large fat deposits, it may not retract well. However, this problem can be resolved through additional procedures, such as a tummy tuck.
Ideal candidates have realistic expectations for what stomach liposuction can achieve. This surgery removes isolated fat deposits but cannot reduce severe sagging or cellulite. Patients should understand that liposuction is a contouring procedure – its main purpose is to create a slimmer shape. It does not guarantee a perfect body. Patients should not see stomach lipo as a way to lose weight.
